Sudden cardiac arrest usually strikes without warning and when it does, it is often fatal.
Statistics indicate that 70% to 80% of sudden cardiac arrest cases occur mostly at home or in public places. When you saw a relative, a colleague, or a stranger collapsed due to cardiac arrest, would you know what to do? In such cases, only those who are present at the scene are able to provide resuscitation promptly.
This is why you need resuscitation training or CPR.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation or CPR is an essential life-saving skill that everyone should have in their pockets. Like what we always say, accidents happen anytime, anywhere. What makes them more dangerous is they may come at the most unexpected occasions – cardiac arrest, drowning, smoke inhalation, and other causes.
Why Take Action: The Facts
Only 26% of people in Australia are trained and confident to perform first aid and CPR in an emergency, according to a research from St. John Ambulance Victoria. This is particularly low, despite 99 percent of Australians know that resuscitation and first aid are “critical life skills.”
Reluctance or not having enough skills and knowledge in those areas has resulted in a number of sudden cardiac deaths that could have been prevented if bystanders respond immediately to the situation.
Early Resuscitation is essential. Once the heart has been kept oxygenated, it is easier for it to restart and restore its normal function.
Bystander CPR increases Survival Rates
Effective bystander CPR is proven invaluable in emergency situations including a sudden cardiac arrest. The sooner the resuscitation is applied, the better because for every minute of delay it takes to resuscitate and defibrillate the victim, the survival rate will be decreased by 10%.
Given that the chance of survival falls significantly without bystander CPR, it is therefore vital for everyone to learn and undergo First Aid and CPR Training as you will never know when is the time to put those skills in good use.
